2010/11/12  SCV EVENTS
On Friday, October 22, 2010 at 9 a.m. The Georgia Historical Society, the Georgia Battlefields Association and the
Georgia Department of Economic Development dedicated a historical marker noting the Battles for Atlanta.  The
marker was installed at the Carter Center overlooking Atlanta from the Union lines. The event was attended by
Tony Parrott, representing the Fayette Co. Historical Society.

Between July and Sept. 1864, during that American Civil War, U. S. And Confederate armies fought five battles for
control of Atlanta, the major manufacturing center and railroad hub of the Deep South.  Four battles took place inside
the present – day I-285 perimeter: Peachtree Creek (July 20), Bald Hill (July 22), Ezra Church (July 28) and Utoy Creek
(Aug 6).  Though most were Confederate defeats, these battles kept U. S. Forces out of Atlanta for nearly six weeks.
At Jonesboro (Aug 31 – Sept. 1), the U. S. Army cut the last railroad supply line into Atlanta, forcing the Confederates
to evacuate.  The fall of Atlanta on Sept. 2, 1864, assured the re-election of Abraham Lincoln and the final defeat of
the Confederacy.

This marker is an Official Civil War 150 Event, an effort to promote the sesquicentennial of the war for tourism.
